Once Upon a Hook: My Exhibition of Crochet Cosplays at Iceland Knit Fest

I can’t wait to share all the details about my epic adventure at Iceland Knit Fest’s “Once Upon a Hook” exhibition. Get ready for a wild ride as I take you behind the scenes of my crochet cosplay extravaganza.

Picture this: three days of jaw-dropping looks and sleepless nights at Iceland Knit Fest. Trust me, the struggle was real, especially when the Met office drops a yellow weather warning on you at the last minute… But who needs sleep when you’re surrounded by the magic of crochet, right?

Now, let’s talk about Icelandic weather, the ultimate unpredictable character in this story. It played its part in our little drama, but hey, that’s what makes Iceland so enchanting.

We learned our lesson and will definitely book our hotel wayyyy in advance next time instead of trying to get by in a tent. No more surprises, thank you very much!

But let me tell you, despite the weather shenanigans, I had an absolute blast at the exhibition. The best part? Meeting all the amazing people who follow my crochet journey on Instagram. It was like a reunion with long-lost friends, finally putting faces to those familiar usernames. The love and support I received were overwhelming, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

The highlight of the exhibition was seeing people’s reactions to my cosplays. Mirabel and the ballgown stole the show, hands down. Most people couldn’t believe I made them from scratch. The number of times I was asked, “Did you really make all of these yourself?” was just priceless. It felt like a validation of all the late-night crochet sessions and meticulous craftsmanship that went into each piece.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing: unfortunately, I only packed one petticoat for the ballgown and Mirabel, and we ended up regretting that choice. We had to think on our feet and come up with a creative solution. At first, we tried building a contraption with wire, but that didn’t quite cut it. So, we took the legs off Mirabel’s mannequin and showcased her skirt flat on the floor. It did the trick and did justice to the circle skirt.

Now, let’s talk favorites. It’s like choosing a favorite child, but if I had to, I’d say the ballgown still holds a special place in my heart. It may not be my best-made piece, but it’s my first big cosplay, and that sentimental value is hard to beat. Plus, who can resist the allure of a stunning ballgown, right?

To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect from this exhibition. Would people embrace my crochet madness, or would they think I’m a little nuts? Well, let me tell you, my friends, I got my fill of both. The wide-eyed looks of astonishment and the occasional “You’re crazy!” comments were music to my ears. It’s those moments that make all the hard work and yarn hoarding worth it.

As for what’s next on the horizon, I’m open to possibilities. Maybe an interview with @gunnhann? Who knows? Life’s full of surprises, and I’m ready to embrace whatever comes my way.

For all you aspiring artists out there: the sky’s the limit, my friends. Yarn holds endless possibilities, and crochet (or knitting) is your creative superpower. So, don’t be afraid to dream big, push the boundaries, and let your imagination run wild. And if you ever get the chance to exhibit your work, go all out! Be extra, be over the top, because you never know when that chance will come knocking again.

With a heart full of gratitude, I want to give a massive shoutout to Svana, the amazing organizer of Iceland Knit Fest. Thank you, my friend, for believing in me and giving me this incredible opportunity. This exhibition wouldn’t have been possible without your support.

Until we meet again, keep those hooks busy, embrace your creative spirit, and let’s see what the future holds.
